Return to Current Site Update

May 27, 2001

  • Address Book - Hyperlinks have been added to the names of all those who died in Vietnam. The names are linked directly to the respective Memorial page for each individual.. In addition, the event descriptions have been expanded with the best detail that we currently have of the incident that resulted in a KIA or WIA.

  • Memorials - We have added 55 memorial pages to the site to honor all Charlie company members who died during their tour in Vietnam. Photos and additional details, memories and information would be very welcome.

Still a long way to go on this project. We need to index every single name against "The Wall" database and the Vietnam Casualty Search pages to establish correct details. In addition, I would like to add the panel and line reference information for the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall. (And for the internet "Virtual Wall" project. site) Could really use some help with this one. No HTML coding involved. All you need to do is look up the data, copy it, and then send me an email.
  • Memories - Layout of additional submissions is under way.
  • Photo Gallery - Still in process of scanning 92 additional photos. Still waiting for former Charlie company members to send their photos to be scanned (and returned of course) in order to add them to the Gallery.

I received some information on missing names in some of the photos from Randy Edge (Thanks Randy).
  • Home Page - Still turning the dials here. And still not happy with the "look". Any suggestions?

  • Address Book - Gave it up! The Address Book is now reformatted into alphabetical order and accessed via an index page. I did add a field for platoon. If you recognize any of the names and you know the correct platoon, please send in the data to update the address Book/Roster. The "look" of the page has been adjusted a bit, but the light green headers have got to go!

An Address Book project is under way to cross reference all the names where data is missing with "The Wall"  database. We should do the best job that we can to identify and honor "those who gave all"
  • Memorials - A new project  is under way to expand the Charlie Company memorial pages to honor all of our members who made the greatest sacrifice during their tour of duty.
  • Memories - Layout of additional submissions is under way.
  • Photo Gallery - In process of scanning 85 additional photos in addition, I have been contacted by several former Charlie company members who will be sending their photos to be scanned (and returned of course) in order to add them to the Gallery.
  • Home Page - Layout still not right. I don't like the colors and it looks kind of goofy. Any suggestions?

  • Address Book - Still need someone to take on the Address Book as a project. Although arranging the names in platoon order is still more desirable, we may have to go for alphabetical order with an extra field for "Platoon". This will enable the easy division of the table into multiple-linked pages. Any thoughts on this?
  • Vietnam Today - Section has been published as a work in process Billy Kelly  is currently in Vietnam working on the hospital expansion project at My Lai.
  • Memories - Section has been Published and is up and running as a work in process. The first four short entries have been included.
  • General - The colors of the drop down menus on the Memorial pages and the POW-MIA-KIA have been changed to black and silver to be more appropriate for the page topics.

May 14, 2001

  • Home Page Has been redesigned (temporary layout) to allow for a highlighting of the various features of the web.
  • Address Book - The Address Book and Company Roster page has gotten too big for it's own good. It seems like it is taking an hour to load. We need to come up with a better solution. Although arranging the names in platoon order is desirable, we may have to go for alphabetical order with an extra field for "Platoon". This will enable the easy division of the table into multiple-linked pages. Any thoughts on this? Or even better, does anyone want the project? I have a page development site up and running on the same server as the main site, to allow for "many hands stirring the pot". As sections are finished and tested using all of the main browsers, I have been using a FTP to load the code to the main site.
  • Vietnam Today - A project has been started for a new section to focus on Vietnam Today. Billy Kelly has just signed on as associate editor and Vietnam Correspondent. Billy is currently in Vietnam working on the hospital expansion project at My Lai.
  • Vietnam Medals and Awards - Section has been completed and is up and running. There will be additions to this section as soon as time permits.
  • General - Microsoft style, Drop-Down menus have been added to topical pages throughout the site. This will enable faster transition to any area of the site without having to return to the Home Page Index. I know that you don't like the color. I didn't like it either when I had to wear it 33 years ago! (I will be changing the colors of the menu on all of the memorial pages to black and silver).
I had first allowed the menu to follow the page as it was scrolled, but this was quite annoying, they are now fixed at the top of each page.

For those who have emailed and commented on the rapid building of the site and the addition of more new pages, Memorial Day is coming up at the end of this month. We should see heavy web access of military oriented sites. This represents a great opportunity to reach out and establish contact with more Charlie Company members. An established web site is an outstanding way to welcome them home! In addition, we need to update the copyright for all of the new pages at one time to conserve $$$,,, Ouch!

  • Home Page Links added to new pages under construction.
  • PTSD. Page  Page has been added to site  (Still looking for some additional links to discussion boards for those who need to talk with other about PTSD. They must be active and relevant boards. We do not want to include forums just for the sake of numbers)
  • Agent Orange Page Shell (under construction page) has been added. Just waiting for final research from a contributor to finish page and publish,
  • Vietnam Medals and Awards Shell (under construction page) has been added. Research underway.
  • Veterans Issues Page Shell (under construction page) has been added. Still discussing style/format with two other contributors. Relevant data being gathered.
  • General The site has been submitted to several of the major search engines on 4/30/01. Slow add process for some of the crawler engines. It could take up to three weeks. Advertising banners should be gone in a few days.

  • Gateway Page Camouflage background has been added to the page and Meta tags have been generated for the search engines. The opening "Greeting" has also been changed to a graphic.
  • Home page This page has also been updated with a camouflage background. The "open new window" command has been removed from all hyperlinks except for the "Cool Board" discussion forum link.
  • Address Book There is a new look for this page, and 97 new names have been added.
  • Veteran's Links New look for the page with many new links added.
  • Guest book Project continues in an attempt to de-bug this page. May be server-side related.
  • What He Say??? New Nam'Speak glossary has been added. Still in process of researching terminology.
  • General The site will be submitted to the seven major search engines on 4/30/01. In addition, we will submit the site content/description to several large directories for inclusion. Following this, we will be working on a list of 1500+ smaller search engines and directories using a spider/robot. Copyright on the Charlie Company, USA Site appearance and content (for most of the pages) has been completed Copyright © 2001 Charlie Company, U S A . All Rights Reserved

  • Site Updates This page has been added with a corresponding link on the Home Page, to document the development of the Charlie Company Website, and to later serve as an advisory for frequent visitors, to highlight new information and additions to the Site content (including the Company Roster and Address book).
  • Site Statistics Although the site is still in early development, and it has not as yet been submitted to any directories or search engines, the server statistics indicate an average of 321visits per day to the Home Page.
  • C 3/1-11th. History Page has been expanded to include a more detailed history of the Unit from it's origin, and re-activation in July of 1966, at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii through the first third of 1969. Research continues to include the rest of the Unit's history through it's relocation to Firebase Hill 4-11 and subsequent departure from the Former Republic of Vietnam.
A project has also been started to add additional sidebar information and photo links as further information resources.
  • Guest book A project has been started to de-bug the code in the guest book data entry form which is apparently cutting off the end of some posted messages.
  • Photo Gallery several broken photo links have been corrected.
A project is under way to add an additional 82 photographs to the Gallery
  • General The entire Site has been adjusted to look a bit better on Netscape (old and newer browsers) Different browsers see the same site differently and it is difficult to find a compromise that will make everyone happy. But as the server statistics indicate that 88.3% of our visitors over the past three week use Internet Explorer and only 11% came here with Netscape, we don't want to turn the dials too much!
